It's Time to Read

By Nicole Andrews on April 11th, 2022

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) and the Wood Buffalo Regional Library (WBRL) have once again partnered on the It's Time to Read book club, featuring Katherena Vermette's The Strangers.

Settle in with a blanket, a cup of tea and participate in It's Time to Read from the comfort of your own home! The book club is entirely virtual. Visit the website regularly for discussion, polls and other exclusive content. All are welcome to join; however, it is important to note books may contain adult content, including but not limited to adult language and themes, and violence.

We are excited to announce our next It’s Time to Read book club read: The Strangers by Katherena Vermette, a Métis writer from Winnipeg. Winner of the 2021 Atwood Gibson Writers’ Trust Prize for Fiction, longlisted for the 2021 Scotiabank Giller Prize, and #1 Indigo Book of the Year, The Strangers is a staggering intergenerational saga that explores how connected we are, even when we’re no longer together – even when we’re forced apart.

While The Strangers features heavy and intense content, it is an important read for those with the capacity to read it. It’s Time to Read book club chose The Strangers for its accurate and moving portrayal of intergenerational trauma, racism, and classism. While the characters face hard, almost impossible journeys, The Strangers also features a glimpse into resilience and survival, where readers can find compassion and empathy.
